2020 Distinguished Alumni Awards Conferred
The Department of Computer Science is pleased to formally recognize Mario Calixte ('10,'12) and Joshua Mindel ('82,'86) with 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award distinctions.
Calixte is the first recipient of the department's 2020 Distinguished Early Career Alumni Award. This distinction is conferred to an alumni whose degree was awarded within the past 15 years and who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in the computing field in his career whether industry, government, or academia.
Accepting the award virtually from Haiti, he offered this advice to his fellow Hokies. “As a future computer scientist, you can start to count your blessings. You are among a very fortunate minority of professionals who can make a great living doing things you enjoy.”
He further adds, “But remember, life is not only about getting a high-paying job. You have to get out of your comfort zone. I encourage you to go out and volunteer your time and skills. It’s fun and great for personal development. And it’s so gratifying to give back to your community.”
Mindel, who currently works as manager of the technical program management team for data engineering at Google, is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. This annual award recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions in research and/or practice. Mindel had a special opportunity to share personal reflections of his experiences in the field--both in the technology sector and as United Nations volunteer in both Liberia and Vietnam--during the virtual awards banquet.
