My research intersects computational social science and human-computer interaction with a focus on applying and developing natural language processing techniques to understand and improve how humans talk to each other. I apply computational linguistics and experimental design to demonstrate how language evolves in interactions ranging from communication between police officers and black drivers in traffic stops to discussions around facts and current events on online platforms. The goal of my research is to improve how we talk to each other by examining linguistic behavior at-scale and how technology contributes to the way we consume and discuss information with applications to news, online communities, social media, and institutional contexts.
