Recently, Bradley spoke with us about her path to becoming an advisor, her college experience, and shared advice for students.

What was college like for you?

JB: I am a Virginia Tech alum and had a great college experience learning what being a Hokie is all about.

Tell me about your path to becoming an academic advisor. What drew you to the career, and why is it important?

JB: My educational background is in the life sciences, and prior to my career in academic advising, my role was mainly in a laboratory setting. I really enjoyed my interactions with both undergraduate and graduate students and was interested in shifting my focus into more of a student-support type of position. I was drawn to academic advising because it is such a great way to make meaningful connections with students. I enjoy being a part of their support network and assisting them with all aspects of their own self-discovery during their time as a student and beyond.

What brought you to Virginia Tech?

JB: I came to Virginia Tech as an undergraduate student, and I never left! I love being a Hokie and part of the community.

What is something you would like students to know?

JB: Advisors want their students to come to their office and meet with them! We sincerely want to get to know our students and be a part of their college experience.

What advice do you have for students who may be struggling in computer science or don’t know if the program is right for them?

JB: Please make an appointment and chat with your advisor. We can help you identify why you may be struggling and can make suggestions on possible ways to work through those challenges. We can also make referrals to other offices on campus that can offer support and additional resources too.
