About the department

We are part of the comprehensive and highly-ranked College of Engineering and collaborate extensively on transdisciplinary research and education initiatives across the college, university, and at other institutions. 

We have 89 faculty members, including 67 tenured or tenure-track, 29 early career awardees, and numerous recipients of awards from IBM, Intel, AMD, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Cisco, and others. Our faculty direct several interdisciplinary research centers, including the Center for Human-Computer Interaction, the Center for Community Empowering Pandemic Prediction and Prevention from Atoms to Societies, and the Sanghani Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. The department is home to 967 graduate students and 1,720 undergraduate majors.

In addition, our programs in the greater Washington, D.C., area -- including the new Institute for Advanced Computing  Alexandria, Virginia -- offer unique proximity to government and industry partners and also are expanding rapidly.
