The Department of Computer Science welcomed assistant professor Dawei Zhou during the spring 2022 semester.

He most recently received his Ph.D. in computer science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2021.

Dawei indulged us by sharing 10 things about himself, ranging from his research interests to how he is still working to strive a work-life balance.


1. What does your research entail?

Data mining and machine learning, especially in complex rare category analysis, network representation and graph generative models with applications in social network analysis, healthcare, and financial fraud analysis.

2. What do you hope to accomplish with your research?

Conscious and universal machine learning.

3. Why did you choose Virginia Tech?

Strong engineering school

4. What Is your favorite thing about your job?

Teaching and research

5. Why is your job important to you?

Because I love this job

Still working on it.

9. Is there anything else that you would like to share? 

I am currently looking for self-motivated undergraduate/master/Ph.D. students who would like to work on graph mining and related areas. 

10. What has been one of your favorite summer time activities in Blacksburg or the surrounding area?

Camping and tubing by the New River Junction.
